ASSIGNING POLICIES
In order to facilitate the smooth coordination of officiating assignments, the following policies/procedures have been adopted:
Officials must be qualified members in good standing in their Unit in order to officiate games.
If an official’s account is not in good standing, he/she cannot receive: (1) playoff games for the current season, and (2) further assignments until the account is cleared.
All assignments must go through the Assignor. If a school calls you to work a game, tell them you are available and they must call the Assignor – you cannot accept the game from them.
Assignments are not to be traded/given away to another official. If you cannot work, then the assignment shall be given back to the Assignor.
If an official cannot arrive on time in order to conduct a proper “pre-game” then he/she shall not accept the assignment. Arrival time is 20 minutes prior to the start of the match.
Assignments will be made: Girls Season –August
Boys Season –January
In the event you will be out of town, please make prior arrangements with the Assignor.
If an official “referees” both matches (doubleheader), the umpire shall pay that official $10.
The assignment fee is $5 for each assignment.
Prompt return of the assignment letter is essential. If the assignment letter is not returned to the assignor within the time specified on the assignment contract, all assignments may be re-assigned by the assignor.
If payment of assigned games is not made with the returned assignment contract, the official’s “acceptance” is voided and games will be re-assigned.
There will be no refund for assignments canceled by officials.
The Assignor shall reimburse officials for assignment fees, if: (1) the school cancels and the official is unable to work the re-scheduled match, and (2) the Assignor is able to collect the assignment fee from the school. There will be no reimbursement if the official receives a partial/full payment.
Officials shall complete a Reimbursement Form and send it to the Assignor prior to the due date. To be eligible for reimbursement on canceled games, the Unit member must submit this request prior to:
November 15th Girls Season
May 15th Boy’s Season
“No Shows”- a penalty of $20 is assessed if an official is a “No Show”. The official that worked alone shall receive $10, unless he/she received reimbursement from the school.
“Lateness” is defined as game time. A penalty of $10 is assessed if an official is “late”. If a official arrives later than 30 minutes after the match has started, the Unit Board shall assess a higher penalty, with a portion going to the other official.
All fines/penalties shall be paid within 10 days. Send a check to the Unit Treasurer.
Officials should advise the Assignor of open dates in order to be considered for additional assignments.
An official may not work a high school athletic contest assigned by the SCVOA Unit Assignors if not in the proper uniform.
Athletic officials are independent contractors and therefore are not to be covered by workers compensation statutes. The San Gabriel Unit, its Board, instructors, Assignor and volunteers assume no liability whatsoever. Proof of officiating liability insurance is required of each official and must be provided to the Unit Secretary prior to September 30th of the current year.
Officials are independent contractors. All officials must pay state and federal taxes.
THE ABOVE PROCEDURES/POLICIES ARE NOT INTENDED TO BE OVERLY
RESTRICTIVE, BUT RATHER TO HELP MANAGE OUR OBLIGATION TO THE
C.I.F. TO ASSIGN OFFICIALS TO CONTESTS.

All officials are expected to travel. Please call the Unit Assignor now with your available dates between May 13th and May 28th. All Southern Section assignments are at 7pm or 7:30pm.
Your arrival time at the game site shall be no less than 30 minutes prior to game time. Linespeople have been instructed to arrive 15 minutes prior to game time. A proper pre-game shall be conducted by the Referee an Umpire and two linespeople. The coin toss shall be conducted 20 minutes prior to game time. (This is to allow for introductions and announcements by the home school.).
If you arrive late to assigned playoff games, the Unit will fine you $10. “Late” is defined as less than 30 minutes prior to game time. If you cannot meet this obligation, please do not make yourself available on that day.
If the Assignor calls to offer you an assignment, you are expected to travel. If you cannot leave the San Gabriel area, let the Assignor know now, and he will convey this information to Southern Section.
There is no guarantee that you will receive a match on a day you have listed as available. The amount of assignments depends on the number given to our Unit by the CIF-SS Committee. The Instructional-Chair gives the Unit Assignor the list of officials recommended for playoffs, as well as the order to use them. The SS Committee chooses the officials for semis and finals. Our longstanding goal in this Unit is to involve as many qualified officials as possible in post-season play.
Congratulations on having a very good season. Best of luck with any assignments you might receive!
